AT&T Apple iPhone 4 Signal Strength Debate

July 4, 2010 by · 4 Comments

With Apple’s recent release of the iPhone 4, it appears that there may be some sort of flaw in the signal strength showed by the number of bars.

It has been stated by Apple representatives that the iPhone 4 has been displaying a signal strength that has been inaccurate due to an error in the coding.  Many are not sure what this may mean for the company, but there is definitely some suspicion about the ethics surrounding the issue.

When many consumers complained to Apple about the bar signal of the original iPhone, Apple simply blamed AT&T. However, looking back on the issue, Apple may have been manipulating consumers to believe that their signals were at full level when indeed they were not.

Apple and Steve Jobs are expected to release an update for the iPhone 4, as well as older models of the iPhone, including the first release and the iPhone 3GS.  This update patch will supposedly fix the problem relating to the bar signal strength that is displayed on the iPhone.

Experts and consumers in the industry contemplate the actual reasoning for the update and why the flaw was not detected long ago.  Ultimately, Apple and AT&T will have to both assume responsibility.  Fortunately, the actual flaw was only pertinent in areas where signal was difficult to receive and did not cost customers much of a disadvantage in the long run.

  1. Morely Dotes says:

The problem is the faulty design of the iPhone 4′s antenna; slightly damp skin can contact the antenna directly, which is not true on any other phone; the iPhone 4 antenna is on the outside of the case. And when slightly damp skin contacts the antenna, it changes the resonant frequency, thus greatly reducing the available signal for the phone.

This is a hardware flaw, and no amount of software can fix it. Apple screwed up big time on this release. Of course, the Apple fanboy cultists will continue to buy the obviously-inferior phone and claim that it’s superior. That’s how cults work.

Amazing how many antenna experts there are these days, as evidenced by Morely Dotes above. Without having ever used a spectrum analyzer, or performed a single calculation in their lives, they can diganose merely by reading blogs and comments that a design is “faulty”. What a wonderful skill they possess.

  3. A large-size company like Apple must have a team for User-Experience assesment before the product is released to market. Can’t belive they didn’t catch this big problem. Hope their claim to a software issue is legit.

  4. Basil says:

Apple has such a Team, but they probably lost their phones in a bar somewhere!

Jobs: “So how is the iPhone4′s signal reception”
    Team: “Ehm..eh…Its perfect boss”
