Robert “Bobby” Spillane Has Passed Away

Robert “Bobby” Spillane, 45, son of Irish mobster Mickey Spillane, died early Saturday morning after he fell out the window of his sixth-floor Eighth Avenue, New York City apartment in the Hell’s Kitchen neighborhood near Times Square. His father, Mickey, ran rackets in the very same neighborhood back in the 1960s and 1970s. Mickey was known as a “gentleman gangster”. He was gunned down in 1977 by rivals, the Hell’s Kitchen Irish mob “Westies”. Bobby was then 12 years old.

Jim McManus, a long time neighborhood power broker and the uncle of Bobby Spillane, said it was “a terribly sad accident”. He stated that one of Bobby’s arms was in a sling. He said Bobby was leaning on the screen of an open window, calling to his brother, Michael, who was standing down below. The screen gave way and Bobby fell through the open window.

Michael Spillane, 46, called 911 as soon as he found his brother’s body. He had just crossed the street after leaving a Starbucks coffee shop. Officers and medics responded to the call around 7:45 AM. Bobby was pronounced dead on the scene.

A witness to the incident, the manager of Cosmic Diner, informed reporters that “Michael was coming from Starbucks this morning and as he crossed the street he saw Robert lying there.”

Bobby, the youngest of three children, was a small-time actor. He had guest roles on television shows like “NYPD”, “Rescue Me” and “Law & Order”. He also wrote an off-Broadway play, entitled “All Dolled Up”, about real-life cross dressing gangsters.

There is no suspicion of foul play but it is still unclear if Bobby’s death was an accident or if he committed suicide. Police have not confirmed any details as of yet.
