Shelter Island: The Place To Be On Independence Day

Shelter Island is the place to be on Sunday (July 4, 2010). It is the perfect spot to view the 10th Annual Port of San Diego Big Bay Boom as it fills the sky with spectacular pyrotechnic light show. Shelter Island together with the Harbor Island, the North Embarcadero Area and between the Seaport Village and Coronado Ferry Landing are the spots where four barges of the show had been placed strategically so the fireworks can be visible from all of San Diego Port’s parks around the northern and central parts of the San Diego Bay Area. Along with Shelter Island, other spots good for viewing the fireworks show are: Harbor Island, Spanish Landing, Embarcadero Marina Parks North and South, Cesar Chavez Park, Coronado Tidelands Park and the Imperial Beach Pier.
Shelter Island is 8, 000 acres of soil, swamp and fog situated in the middle of North and South Forks of Long Island. You can reach Shelter Island by shuttle ferries from Greenport or North Haven while the country road through the island is Route 114.
Shelter Island used to be a farming community with few fish factories lining its shores 100 years ago but today it is a summer resort. Currently, there are approximately 2,500 permanent residents and it swells to over 8,000 during summer. Since land is quite expensive in Shelter Island, there are only 40 building permits.
Shelter Island has two post offices: one in The Heights and another one in The Center. There is a library and a school for Grade K to Grade 12 in The Center. Golf can also be played at a public course or a private club. There are also four public beaches and a beach club. There is a: Yacht Club for socializing and yachting of families; hotels with various sizes and styles; and a wide variation of restaurants that meet every taste and purse. Newspapers can be bought at the Pharmacy, Heights and Tomis, Center. There are plenty of stores which sells everything a person should need but there are no any public movie theaters.
Shelter Island casual visitors for only a day on a weekend should opt to walk or bike onto the ferry instead of bringing a car since the ferry line can be very long on summer weekends.
