Once it is determined that your toddler is ready for preschool, the first step is to locate several programs that fit both your needs and your toddler's needs. Ask your pediatrician, your friends, and other trusted individuals about available programs.
Ask them what they like and don't like about these programs. Don't take their opinions to the bank, however, because everyone has biases. If you know a parent who is on the same wavelength as you when it comes to parenting, discipline, and values, you may want to consider her recommendation more seriously. Focus on what's important, and don't let yourself be swept away by superficial things when making your decision.
Resist the urge to be taken in by a best preschool programme in Singapore that is more glitter than substance. Often the best preschool is not necessarily the one with the best playground equipment or the most financial resources.
Find out about the program itself. What is the school's philosophy about programs for toddlers? Is it a structured environment or more of a relaxed atmosphere? Does the school encourage independent learning, or just a toddler always work along with the group? Does the school offer a good bit of physical activity so that your toddler can let off steam? Will the school be sensitive to whatever special needs your toddler has?
What kinds of activities will your toddler be involved in? What can you expect her to learn? Is this a school that mainly encourages play, exploration, and basic skills acquisition, or does it have other expectations? Basic skills acquisition means introducing the toddler to her ABCs and simple counting. She may learn how to fold clothes or complete other chores and learn basic skills that will help her grow into greater independence and responsibility.
As a general rule, if a preschool brags about its academic program, you may want to look elsewhere. Your toddler does not need academics as the mainstay of her preschool experience. She will have plenty of that in kindergarten!
