Bacterial conjunctivitis is the most common type of eye infection and is caused by bacteria entering the eye. It can be spread through contact with an infected person, sharing towels or other items that have been exposed to the bacteria, or through contaminated water. Viral conjunctivitis is another type of eye infection that is caused by a virus.

It is often spread through contact with an infected person or through an airborne virus. Allergic conjunctivitis is an eye infection that is caused by an allergic reaction to something, such as pollen, dust, pet dander, or medication.

The most common symptom of a swollen eye infection is redness, swelling, and itchiness of the affected eye. Other symptoms may include discharge from the eye, blurred vision, and a feeling of grittiness in the eye.

Treatment for a swollen eye infection depends on the cause of the infection. Bacterial conjunctivitis is usually treated with antibiotic eye drops or ointment. Viral conjunctivitis is typically treated with antiviral eye drops. Allergic conjunctivitis is usually treated with antihistamine eye drops.
